This Week in Grade 5/6

Hello all!

My apologies for not updating sooner, but we are back!  here is what we have to look forward to this week:

Math:  We have begun a unit on geometry and this past week we focused on measuring and classifying angles.  This week we will be looking at polygons, specifically quadrilaterals and triangles, and classifying them by their attributes.

We are also starting a "number ninjas" program.  Kids will receive a different colored belt as they move through the different levels of multiplication.  Please practice at home!

Literacy:  We are focusing on inferencing in reading.  We are trying to look deeper at a text to figure out the author's meaning.  Please read aloud with your children at home and discuss the meaning behind what you read.  The Harry Potter, Hunger Games and City of Ember series are a few suggestions for you.  We are focusing on including detail in our writing to paint a picture for our reader.  If we can include details, then we can visualize what we are reading better!

Pigeon Impossible

Science:  This week we will be building bridges to look deeper at how forces can affect structures, and designing and testing homemade airplanes to better understand the 4 forces of flight.

Religion:  We are looking at the different types of prayer and how we can speak to God in the best way that individually suits us.

Arts:  We are continuing to explore different themes in drama.  We have also started an extra curricular dance team that ill be competing May 11th!  More details to follow.  Not all classmates are part of this as some were not interested.

Phys-Ed:  We continue the beep test and various fitness exercises along with games of low organization.

NOTES:

Please check agendas nightly.  Many students are "forgetting' agendas at home.

The class will be participating in a Stations of the Cross presentation for the school on Holy Thursday

Some of our students participated in a lovely rendition of Stations of the Cross at the Rosary Chapel the Friday before March Break.  More pictures to come!

This Week in 5/6R

This week we were "cupid crazy!"  We had so much fun in the spirit of Valentine's Day!  We spent some time noticing each other's inner beauty, and then had an "inner beauty" fashion show where each student walked the "red carpet" while announcers announced the "outfits" each student wore, for example:  "Here is Bella, showcasing just what kindness, compassion towards cats, and a good listener look like!  Way to go Bella!"

We also made Valentine cards and bracelets for people that use the facilities at "Street Help."  In the words of one of our students, "everyone deserves a cupid."  The kids were very excited to give of their time and crafting talents to someone who could use a hug.

This week we will be tackling the following curriculum concepts:

Math:  Rounding, adding and subtracting decimals

Reading:  Summarizing non-fiction articles

Writing:  Word Study is back this week along with writing from different points of view.

Science:  The properties of air and different types of force continue to be explored

Religion:  We will be looking at how to carry out Jesus' message of love and forgiveness in the community.

Arts:  We will begin to look at different rhythms and tempos in music

Notes:  Please check your child's agenda daily.  I write in each agenda if a student has not completed their work or there is an issue at school that requires attention.  The agenda is so important for communication between home and school.

JKSK registration is Wednesday from 5 to 7

Hopefully you were able to enjoy your family day with the ones you love!

This Week in Grade 5/6

Ah!  Finally a relief from the Polar Vortex!  Our kids actually went outside for recess this week!  We look forward to more balmy temperatures so our kids can play outside and get some much needed fresh air!

Here's what's up this week:

Math:  We have begun our unit on decimals.  This week we looked at representing, comparing and ordering decimals.  Next week we will be adding and subtracting decimal numbers.  If you want to know the full list of learning goals for this unit, they are posted in your child's notebook.

Reading:  We are summarizing non-fiction articles this week.  We have looked at different articles from the Newsela website this past week, and have discussed how to summarize them.  Now the students will summarize these articles independently.

Writing:  We are looking at different points of view in writing this week.  We read the mentor text "Diary of a Spider," and discussed how our point of view is different from the main character in the story.  This week we will continue to look at points of view in different literary works.

Media:  We are wrapping up our unit on overt and implied messages this week with the creation of our own advertisements.

Science:  We are exploring the properties of air and the different types of forces.

Religion:  We are wrapping up our study of the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus.  We are performing a tableaux recreation of the story this week for the Grade 1/2 class, and completing a feedback sheet to go along with it.

Notes:  The students are encouraged to write in their agendas daily.  I have instructed to have them initialed daily by both a parent and myself.  I will leave a note in the agenda if a student has not completed their work.  Please check your child's agenda daily.

Thanks to all of those parents that came out for our Wintry, Wizardly Math Day!  The kids are so grateful to see their parents get involved in their school life!

This Week in Grade 5/6

This week was an absolute blast in our class.  It is definitely up there as one of my most favorite weeks in my career.  It just flowed, was easy.  We worked hard, all of the kids were invested in the learning and behaving well, and the activities were fun!  We worked out and exercised in Math, we danced in gym, we competed in Social Studies and we studied things from summarizing to media to data to creating goals.  I LOVED our week.  Hopefully we can keep it up next week as well!

This week we will be studying...

MATH:  We continue with our unit on Data Management.  Please ask to see your child's notebook.  The Learning Goals for thew unit are posted there.

READING:  We continue looking at how to summarize both fiction and non-fiction pieces.

WRITING:  We continue our new Word Study program by entering our second week.  Please ask your child to see their notebook.  Some students did not hand in their work Friday.  I will follow up with this by leaving you a note in your child's agenda.

SCIENCE:  We will begin a new Science Unit this week.  Grade 5s will  be studying Forces Acting on Structures and Grade 6s,  Flight

MEDIA:  We are analyzing how the media affects our food choices, and the overt and implied messages in ads and commercials.

RELIGION:  We will be looking at the Parable of the Rich Young Man to identify what it means to strive for a life of holiness (God is the source of holiness; to strive for holiness we are to obey the commandments, follow Jesus Christ and live a life of justice and charity toward God and neighbour.

PHYS-ED:  We continue running the beep test and working out on Tuesdays, while doing dance on Thursdays.

HEALTH:  We are looking at making healthy choices while eating out of the home.
